Tea, being one of the most popular beverages in the world, always had impacts on the environment. They range from clearing of forests to planting tea bushes by destroying natural habitats. This behaviour increases damages the earth and increasing chances of landslides. Also, the use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers will contaminate the natural water supplys and this in turn harms wildlife.
Giving up tea is of course a very drastic move. However, there is a huge need to make the industry more sustainable for any chances of this business to have a good future.
Greener View has recently discovered two tea estates, one in Makaibari and the other in Glenburn, who has taken action towards making Fairtrade and Ethical Tea.
Over there, deforestation has been replaced with poly-cropping to increase soil nutrient content. Alternative biofuels are used to stop trees being cut down for fuel.
Just these small changes has already made a huge difference. Wildlife that have not been seen in a century are making a reappearance on Makaibari land.
It's always good to be supporting the hard work of ethical, fairtrade and Environmentally Friendly tea makers.
This encourages other producers to follow their paths, and this will be a benefit to everyone.
