Take our tree challenge and find out how much you can save. Who are we? Green Mobile (www.greenmobile.co.uk)is the UK's first environmentally friendly landline and mobile phone service provider. It was formed in association with the Woodland Trust and Friends of the Earth (January 2007) in order to raise funds to help these charities tackle environmental damage/issues.The problem Our core message is that more needs to be done to highlight and control the damage caused by the irresponsible disposal of mobile phones. For example, 100 million handsets are thrown away each year in Europe but only 10-15% are recycled safely.

A good reason for concern is that if the cadmium from a single mobile phone battery were to leak into our rivers and streams, it could contaminate 600,000 litres of water.Mobile handsets are designed to last at least 5 years, yet many people upgrade them yearly because of "special" offers from their service providers or for purely fashion reasons. We can't think of any other electronic product that's upgraded so often - and for such little reason. The Science Museum reports that 1700 phones are upgraded every hour in the UK - but with 36kg of CO2 used to manufacture a single 90g phone, this clearly has a huge environmental impact. The solution For each new mobile connection Green Mobile donates ~25 to the Woodland Trust, who plant 5 broad leaf trees (absorbing 1 tonne of CO2). We also give 6% of each customer's ongoing monthly landline, mobile and broadband bills to our green charity partners. Customers are asked to keep their handset for at least another year to reduce the environmental impact of the disposal of old handsets and the manufacture of new ones - we give them ~50 cashback as an incentive. But if a customer really needs a new handset we offer a refurbished one or a cool new green handset (but we tell them it has to last!).


Recent news and the futureThe latest charity to join us is The Environment Investigation Agency, who will use the funds raised by Green Mobile to fight deforestation in Indonesia. In order to spread our message we ask customers to tell friends and family about us.
